Daily Maintenance Knowledge of Vortex Flowmeters

Vortex flowmeters are widely used in petrochemical, new energy, power, metallurgy and other industries for measuring gas, steam and liquid flow. With advantages such as no moving parts, stable performance and wide measuring range, they are common flow measurement instruments on site. Good daily maintenance can effectively extend service life, reduce failure rate and ensure the accuracy of process measurement data.

Daily Inspection (On-site Rounds)

Daily patrol inspection is the first line of defense for stable operation. Operators and instrument maintenance personnel shall focus on checking the following items

  1. Indication status of the transmitter: Check whether the local display value is normal, whether there is blank screen, alarm code, flashing or abnormal jump of flow reading. Compare the reading with adjacent process parameters to judge whether the measurement is consistent with the working condition.
  2. Body and pipeline condition: Check the meter body for leakage at flanges, thread connections and pressure tapping points. Pay attention to corrosion, scaling, adhesion of impurities on the surface of the vortex generator (bluff body). For steam and high-temperature medium working conditions, check for abnormal heat loss and insulation damage.
  3. Cable and junction box inspection: Check whether the signal cable is worn, pulled or soaked. Ensure the junction box is well sealed, free of water, dust and condensation. For explosion-proof sites, confirm that the explosion-proof surface is intact and the sealing gland is tightened.
  4. Ambient working environment: Avoid long-term direct sunlight, strong vibration, high humidity and corrosive gas erosion around the flowmeter. If the on-site environment exceeds the instrument’s rated working conditions, take shielding, shock absorption and ventilation measures in time.

Regular Maintenance Items

According to site medium characteristics and operation load, formulate weekly / monthly / quarterly maintenance plans:

✅ Cleaning of vortex detection component Scaling, coking and solid sediment on the bluff body will distort the vortex signal and cause measurement deviation. Stop the meter and isolate the pipeline before cleaning; use soft cloth or low-pressure compressed air for cleaning. Hard scraping with sharp tools is forbidden to prevent damage to the sensor surface.

✅ Check grounding and shielding Poor grounding is a common cause of signal interference and flow fluctuation. Verify that the instrument grounding wire is reliably connected, the shielding layer is single-ended grounded, and the grounding resistance meets the design requirements.

✅ Parameter review Regularly confirm instrument parameters: medium type, design pressure, design temperature, range, damping coefficient. After process modification, re-match and configure the parameters in time.

✅ Calibration plan Arrange offline or online verification/calibration periodically in accordance with metrological regulations and enterprise specifications to guarantee measurement accuracy.

Common Simple Fault Judgment & Handling

  • No flow display while medium is flowing. Check power supply first; confirm whether the valve is really opened; check whether the sensor is covered by heavy dirt; check cable breakage or poor contact.
  • Flow value jumps violentlyMostly caused by strong pipeline vibration, two-phase flow, unstable medium pressure or poor shielding/grounding. Eliminate vibration sources or add damping parameters appropriately.
  • Measured value is obviously low. Focus on blockage, scaling on the bluff body, or installation not meeting straight pipe section requirements. Confirm upstream and downstream straight pipe lengths.

⚠️ Important Safety Reminder Before any disassembly, cleaning and overhaul: cut off the power supply, close the upstream and downstream isolating valves, fully depressurize and cool down the pipeline, and implement work permit management. For flammable, explosive, toxic and high-temperature media, strictly follow the site safety operation specifications. Do not disassemble explosion-proof components at will.

Long-term Shutdown Preservation

If the flowmeter will be out of service for a long time:

  1. Empty the medium inside the meter body to avoid freezing, corrosion and sediment deposition;
  2. Keep the sensor clean, cover the junction box and display screen for dust prevention;
  3. Store in a dry, shock-free environment;
  4. Record shutdown status for the equipment ledger.

FAQ

How often should a vortex flowmeter be cleaned?
It depends on the medium. Clean water and dry gas may need little cleaning, while dirty, scaling or coking media need more frequent checks. Base the interval on inspection findings and historical data from your site.

Why does my vortex flowmeter show unstable readings?
The usual causes are pipe vibration, two-phase flow, unstable pressure and poor grounding or shielding. Check grounding and vibration first, then review the damping setting.

Do vortex flowmeters need calibration if they have no moving parts?
Yes. No moving parts means lower wear, not zero drift or zero fouling. Periodic verification is still needed to confirm accuracy.

Can I clean the bluff body while the line is running?
No. Isolate the line, depressurize it and follow the work permit procedure before cleaning.

Conclusion

Vortex flowmeters are low-maintenance, but “no moving parts” does not mean maintenance-free. Standardized daily inspection and preventive maintenance reduce unplanned shutdowns and provide reliable flow data for stable production. Need help selecting or servicing a flowmeter?
